Why I Came Back

Why I Came Back

There are moments in life when you think you've closed a chapter for good.

Selling Vigilant Personal Protection Systems was one of those moments for me.

I had spent years building the company, developing products, working with retailers, listening to customers, and trying to make a small difference in how people thought about protecting themselves and their families. When the company was acquired by Mace, I believed that chapter of my career had come to an end.

I was proud of what we had accomplished. We built one of America's leading personal alarm brands. We helped introduce countless people to the idea that personal safety isn't something you think about after something bad happens. It's something you prepare for beforehand.

I thought my work was finished.

I was wrong.

The farther I got from the industry, the more I realized I had left something behind.

It wasn't a company.

It wasn't a product line.

It wasn't a title.

It was the mission.

For more than three decades, I've watched how criminals think, how ordinary people respond under stress, and how quickly life can change because someone was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. I've read letters from customers whose lives were changed because they had a plan. I've also heard from people who wished they had prepared sooner.

Those conversations stay with you.

One thing I've learned is that personal safety isn't really about pepper spray, personal alarms, flashlights, or any other product. Those tools have a place, but they aren't where safety begins.

Safety begins with awareness.

It begins with paying attention.

It begins with making good decisions before you're forced to make difficult ones.

Over the years, I also noticed something else.

People rarely buy a personal safety product because they woke up one morning and decided to become more prepared. Something usually happened first.

A daughter left for college.

A neighbor's home was burglarized.

Someone was followed to their car.

A relationship turned abusive.

A frightening encounter made them realize that bad things don't only happen to other people.

Preparedness often begins with a close call.

I've always wished more people would prepare before they had one.

That idea stayed with me long after I sold my company.

Years ago, I also carried another goal that I never accomplished. I hoped that success in business would someday allow me to contribute in a meaningful way to organizations working to rescue children from human trafficking. While life took my career in different directions, that goal never left me. I realized there was still work I wanted to do, and that unfinished mission became one of the reasons I found myself drawn back to the personal safety industry.

When I looked around, I also realized something else.

The conversation about personal safety had become noisier.

There was more marketing.

More hype.

More social media.

More people selling fear.

There wasn't nearly enough practical education.

That's one of the reasons I started Fight Back.

This isn't a product catalog disguised as a blog.

It's not a collection of sales pitches.

It's a place where I'll share what I've learned after spending decades in this industry. Sometimes I'll challenge conventional wisdom. Sometimes I'll agree with it. I'll always try to explain why I believe what I believe.

We'll talk about crime trends, home security, college safety, situational awareness, travel, emergency preparedness, domestic violence, scams, personal responsibility, and the small habits that often make the biggest difference.

We'll also talk honestly about self-defense products.

I've spent enough years in this business to know that no product replaces awareness, judgment, or training. At the same time, I also know that the right tool, carried legally and used responsibly, can make a tremendous difference when everything else has failed.

Today, I'm manufacturing pepper spray in the United States because I still believe quality matters. I believe consumers deserve products they can trust, and I believe there is still room for thoughtful innovation in a category that hasn't fundamentally changed in decades.

But this publication isn't about selling you pepper spray.

If you never buy a single product from me, I hope you'll still come back to read Fight Back.

If something I write causes you to pay a little more attention while walking through a parking lot, reminds you to talk with your college-bound son or daughter about personal safety, encourages you to create a family emergency plan, or helps you avoid becoming the next victim of a scam, then this publication has done exactly what I hoped it would do.

I'm not interested in creating fear.

I'm interested in creating confidence.

Confidence comes from knowledge.

Confidence comes from preparation.

Confidence comes from understanding that there are practical things every one of us can do to reduce risk.

That has been true throughout my career, and it's still true today.

People sometimes ask me why I came back to this industry.

The answer is simple.

Because my mission wasn't finished.
