We're deep into the science of aerosol self defense sprays.  Our Scorpion pepper spray model adds CS tear gas.  That doesn't just make it a "hotter" pepper spray.  It actually triggers two different, physical body responses that are completely separate from each other.  That's why it is so effective (so effective that it's prohibited in a couple of states).  
The effectiveness of blended self-defense sprays relies on a sophisticated dual-assault on the human nervous system. When a formula combines Oleoresin Capsicum (pepper spray) with CS or CN (tear gas), it does not merely intensify the pain. Instead, it simultaneously activates two distinct neurological pathways, making the physiological response exceptionally difficult to override.
Pathway 1: The Inflammatory Response (Pepper Spray)
Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) functions as a severe inflammatory agent. It specifically targets the transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) receptors. These are the same heat-activated nociceptors that register thermal burns and spicy foods.
When OC binds to these receptors, it triggers an immediate, involuntary physiological shutdown:
  • Capillaries in the eyes dilate, forcing the eyelids to slam shut.
  • The respiratory tract swells, restricting airflow.
  • The skin experiences a severe chemical burn sensation.
Because this is an inflammatory response rather than just a pain response, it physically incapacitates the target regardless of their psychological state.
Pathway 2: The Irritant Response (Tear Gas)
In contrast, CS tear gases bypass the TRPV1 pathway entirely. They interact with the transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) receptors, which are responsible for detecting environmental toxins and chemical irritants.
Activation of the TRPA1 pathway triggers a different set of protective reflexes:
  • Uncontrollable, violent coughing spasms.
  • Profuse tearing and hyper-secretion of mucus.
  • A profound neurological sensation of suffocation, which induces immediate psychological panic.
The Synergy of Dual-Pathway Activation
The tactical advantage of a blended formula lies in this dual-receptor targeting. Certain individuals—such as those under the influence of psychotropic drugs or experiencing extreme psychosis—can occasionally ignore pain signals or override the psychological panic triggered by tear gas (TRPA1).
However, they generally cannot mentally override the mechanical, inflammatory effects of pepper spray (TRPV1), which physically forces the eyes shut and restricts breathing. By hijacking two entirely independent neurological pathways simultaneously, blended sprays ensure that if an attacker possesses a physiological tolerance to one agent, the second agent still enforces incapacitation.
